Carlos A. Serván

I am a sixth-year graduate student in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, my advisor is Benson Farb.
I like problems at the interface between low-dimensional topology and complex algebraic geometry.
Recently, I've been thinking about holomorphic maps between moduli spaces of curves, totally geodesic subvarieties of moduli space and Lefschetz fibrations in 4-manifolds.
Previously, I completed a PhD in Ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Stefano Allesina.
Before that, I was a biology undergrad working with Walter Cabrera-Febola at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

I will be on the postdoctoral job market in the Fall of 2025. Here is my CV.
