Getting Around Hyde Park
The hotel (Hyatt) is located near the intersection of Lake Park Ave and 53rd street. It is at the heart of Hyde park.
Transportation
Chicago has good public transport. You can use apple pay/credit card on the CTA vehicles (buses, "L" trains). But you'll need to purchase tickets on a separate app (Ventra) for the Metra trains.
The following might be useful if you decide to utilize public transport.
- Downtown: Both bus #6 and Metra can take you downtown (and back). The Metra station (51st/53rd St Hyde Park) is right accross Lake Park (go up the stairs to the tracks). The #6 station (S Hyde Park & 53rd) is two block east of the metra station, right accross S Hyde Park.
- From airport: take Blue line (from ORD) or the Orange line (from MDW) to downtown.
- Going to campus: Head north to Whole Foods, cross E Hyde Park and take Bus #172. Get off at Ellis and 57th. Follow the map :). The bus might get crowded in the morning as it gets closer to 9.
Safety
- 53rd street is busy in the evening.
- 57th street (where the University is) is quieter in the evening.
- Don't go beyond the south and west boundaries of the University (i.e., Midway and Ellis).
Grocery
- Whole Foods up north at Hyde Park and Lake Park.
- Hyde Park Produce, Target, and CVS down 53rd if you go west.
- Trader Joe's and Walgreens a few blocks south at 55th and Lake Park.
Restaurants
There are plenty of affordable options near the hotel. Right outside the hotel there are: Starbucks, Chipotle, Roti. A few favorites by the organizing committee: Nando's, Strings, Can't believe it's not meat!, Eto'o, Cafe 53.
Schedule
Grad students are reimbursed for taking you out for meals. Don't miss this chance to ask them about life in Chicago, life at UChicago, and life as a grad student at UChicago!
Thursday, February 22nd
Groups of graduate students will take you to dinner on 53rd! Meet in the hotel lobby at any of the following times: 6:00pm, 7:30pm.
Friday, February 23rd
Room key: E = Eckhart, R = Ryerson. The two buildings are connected on the second and the third floors.
We have the Tea room (E209) reserved for the entire day. Feel free to stay there!
