Tar File Directions

Here is what to do with the file "emerton-thesis.tar.gz":

Save it to "emerton-thesis.tar.gz". Enter "gunzip emerton-thesis.tar.gz",
and you will be left with a file "emerton-thesis.tar".

Type "tar tf emerton-thesis.tar" and you will see a list of
files contained in the tarfile, which should read

title.ps
abstract.ps
toc.ps
acknowledgements.ps
intro.ps
notation.ps
chapter1.ps
chapter2.ps
chapter3.ps
chapter4.ps
chapter5.ps
appendix.ps
refs.ps

These are the component parts of my thesis.

In order to extract any one of them from the tarfile, e.g. "chapter1.ps",
type "tar xf thesis.tar chapter1.ps". Now the file "chapter1.ps " will
appear, and can be viewed with ghostview, or printed. (All the "*.ps"
files are postscript files.) Note that even after a file is extracted,
it is also still contained in the tarfile.

If you print out all the thirteen postscript files in the tarfile and
put them together in the order they are in the tarfile, you have a hard
copy of my thesis. If you have any questions, feel free to mail me.
