This includes extreme value problems and curve sketching, definite and indefinite integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, applications of integrals, and exponential and logarithm functions.

Assignments and Grading Policy

Grades will be based on the following information:
Homework:20%
Tests and Quizzes:40%
Final Exam:40%
Homework will usually be assigned in class twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, and due in class one week after it is assigned. Homework assignments will be available on the web site after class. Short extensions on homework may be granted individually in advance in the case of very good reasons; if this kindness is abused, it will be revoked. In no case will homework be accepted more than a week late, or after the last class day of the quarter. There will be two one-hour tests in class and one two-hour final exam; there may also be quizzes if I feel they are necessary.

Please write your homework neatly and legibly, and staple or paper clip multiple pages together. I suggest that you first solve problems on scratch paper and then write them up neatly on the paper you hand in. If you cannot write legibly, you may wish to type your homework (and learn to write legibly on exams!). Some questions will ask you to prove (or "show") a statement, while others will ask you to calculate an answer; however, even on calculational problems you should be sure to show your work and make it clear how you arrived at your answer and why it is correct.

Please write the following at the top of your homework:

Collaboration Policy: You are encouraged to work together in solving the homework problems, but after solving them you should write up your solutions independently. This is to ensure that you understand the solution yourself and are not just copying someone else's work. Problems assigned as homework may also reappear on quizzes and tests, so you should make sure you can reproduce the solution yourself.

It is the policy of the Department of Mathematics that the following rules apply to final exams in all undergraduate mathematics courses.
  1. The final exam must occur at the time and place designated in the College Final Exam Schedule. In particular, no final examinations may be given during the tenth week of the quarter, except in the case of graduating seniors.
  2. Any student who wishes to depart from the scheduled final exam time for the course must receive permission from Paul Sally (office is Ry 350, phone is 2-7388, email is sally@math.uchicago.edu). Instructors are not permitted to excuse students from the scheduled time of the final exam except in the case of an Incomplete.
