Travel information

For the official University of Chicago page of travel directions, click here.  This does not deal with airports.

If you're looking on a map to find the Mathematics building, you need to know that it's called Eckhart.

For advice about travel from airports, see below.

The University of Chicago is in Hyde Park, which is somewhat south of The Loop.  O'Hare is somewhat north and west; Midway is directly west of Hyde Park.  Although Midway is much closer it's not that much easier by public transport.

There are various options which vary by price and comfort, not necessarily with the obvious relation.

From O'Hare
From Midway

Travel from O'Hare

El+Bus: cost approx $2, time approx 90mins

Take the Blue Line from O'Hare downtown (c.40 mins).  Get off at Jackson, walk one block west to State and perhaps a little bit north or south (either will do) to the nearest bus stop to catch the #6.  There are bus stops every couple of blocks on State Street.  Make sure you're standing on the west side of the street as the bus is travelling south.  But the 6 only goes south on State so if you're on State and you see a 6 then it's definitely the right direction.  You should buy an El ticket at O'Hare that allows a transfer.  Note that the #6 bus goes express past some parts of the city you're happy to avoid.

For the Ramada: get off the #6 at the stop "Hyde Park Boulevard and East End", then walk up East End Avenue for two blocks.
For Wooded Isle: get off the #6 at 57th Street, and it's right there on the oposite side of the road.
For the Quad Club or University get off at 57th street and walk west on 57th street for about ten minutes.
For the International House: get off the #6 at 59th Street and Stony Island, and walk west on 59th Street for two blocks.

Note that if you look at a map you might think you can take the Green Line or Red Line and somehow get to the University like that. However, I would not recommend taking those trains in those directions.

El+Taxi: cost approx $16, time approx 60mins

Take the Blue Line from O'Hare downtown (c.40 mins).  Get off at Jackson and hail a cab.  It should cost about $12-$15 from there.

Omega Shuttle: cost approx $30, time approx 80mins

The shuttle will take you directly to the Ramada, the International House, or the Quad Club (which is the nearest stop to the Mathematics Department).  It is not very frequent, not terribly easy to find at the airport, and not desperately comfortable.  But it does avoid some wandering around in the streets. Click here for the website.  For the Wooded Isle the nearest stop is the Windermere (which is at 1642 E 56th Street if you're looking at a map online); alternatively you can pay a couple of dollars more for them to make an extra stop for you.

Taxi: cost approx $40-70, time 30-60 mins depending on time of day.

Travel from Midway

Bus: cost approx $2, time approx 40-60 mins; not very convenient for Ramada.

Follow signs to CTA.  Take the #55 or X55.

For the Quad Club - get out at University Avenue and walk two blocks south.
For the Wooded Isle - get out at 56th Street and walk a few blocks round the corner to 57th and Stony Island (turn right onto 56th street and then left onto Stony Island).
For the Ramada get out at 56th Street and then get a #6 bus north (you'll have to cross the street to the bus stop on the other side).  Then get off the #6 at the stop "Hyde Park Boulevard and East End", then walk up East End Avenue for two blocks.  You could alternatively just walk north for a while (which you might not want to do late at night).

Note that you might not want to take the bus from Midway at all, especially at night.

Omega Shuttle: cost approx $17, time approx 30mins

The shuttle will take you directly to the Ramada, the International House or the Quad Club (which is the nearest stop to the Mathematics Department). It is a reasonable option for Midway.  Click here for the website.  For the Wooded Isle the nearest stop is the Windermere (which is at 1642 E 56th Street if you're looking at a map online); alternatively you can pay a couple of dollars more for them to make an extra stop for you.

Taxi: cost approx $20-$30, time approx 20-30mins
