Math 50900: Introduction to Algebra (Algebra I)

  8. Description: This is the first of the three Algebra Initiative courses. This course can also be taken for the mathematics endorsement. It will cover the fundamental elements of algebraic thinking, including a deep exploration of the basic number systems and the rules of arithmetic, especially for the real numbers. It will also include the basics of set theory, linear relations, functions, coordinate systems, graphing, solving equations, estimation, and problem solving.

  8. Description: This course will investigate the different ways in which people have thought about and used mathematics in the past, and how they affect the student of present day mathematics. It focusses primarily on the mathematics of the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks. Teachers taking the course will have regular homework related to the mathematics of the cultures being studied, and they will have a final project to be presented in class on the life and work of a more modern mathematician.

  7. Class Size Minimum: 5 students
  8. Description: This is a required course for State Endorsement in science. This class focuses on exemplary science instruction, fluency with middle grades education science instructional content, and appropriate use of diverse instructional strategies. Teachers will be given the opportunity to improve and refine their science teaching practice at the middle grade level through participation in and reflection on varied teaching and learning models informed by seminal research from the fields of science education and cognitive science. Reflection on practice will be further informed through science content-rich class activities using manipulatives, analysis of student work with an emphasis on scientific reasoning and with constant attention to standards-based teaching of middle school science.

Attendance

  1. Teachers must not miss more than two sessions. Missing more than two will result in a grade of "Incomplete."
  2. Unless the teacher arrives within the first 30 minutes of a class, he or she will be marked absent. Chronic tardiness will also result in a grade of "Incomplete."
  3. Attendance for the final day, Wednesday, March 13, is mandatory unless the course instructor has approved arrangements.
