Support

The Department of Mathematics benefits from the support of alumni and friends in many different ways. Many contribute their time, energy and accumulated wisdom by advising prospective students about what being a student at the University of Chicago is like, and advising current students about what life away from the University of Chicago is like. Others contribute to the health of the department through their contributions to mathematical research and education, or to development of applications of mathematics; these enrich the mathematical community in general, and the Department in particular. And of course, other friends contribute financially, helping to make much of what we do possible. Among the things supported partially or fully by gifts to the Department are:

  • the four annual lecture series in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics and geometry/topology,
  • fellowships for beginning graduate students in the department,
  • the REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program, which enables undergraduates interested in mathematics to stay in Chicago during the summer and engage intensively in mathematics,
  • outreach programs for teachers and students in Chicago Public Schools,
  • startup funds for junior faculty,
  • departmental memberships in various mathematical organizations, and
  • the recent renovation of the Tea Room.
