WOMP 2006 Schedule
The following is the current schedule for WOMP 2006. For a more condensed version, click here .
"A Practical Guide to Life in Hyde Park and Beyond" (pdf/ps)
Answers to practical questions about living in the University neighborhood, written by Elizabeth Csima and edited by Travis Schedler and Rachel Epstein.
Morning sessions start at 10 am and afternoon sessions begin at 1 pm, unless otherwise noted.
All sessions will meet in Eckhart 207 unless otherwise noted.
There also happens to be a world music festival going on in the city during the two weeks of WOMP. If you are interested, the schedule for it is here .
Monday, Sept. 11:
- Morning : Welcome and Tour of Hyde Park
- Afternoon : Algebra I - Karen Lange (handout pdf) and Mike Broshi
Basis, dual vector spaces, dimension, linear maps, determinant, characteristic polynomial, Jordan form, rings, ideals, modules, PIDs, UFDs.
Tuesday, Sept. 12:
- Morning : Algebra II - Alan Anders and Rachel Epstein (handout without diagrams pdf)
Classification theorem for abelian groups, classification of modules over PIDs, semisimple and nilpotent decomposition, fields, field extensions, Galois theory.
- Afternoon : Trip to Field Museum of Natural History ($7 admission), ; meet in first-year office at 12:30.
Wednesday, Sept. 13:
- Morning : Topology - Liz Beazley (handout pdf) and Mohammed Abouzaid
Topology, basis, subbasis, compactness, separation axioms, product topology, metric
spaces
Density, First and Second Countability, Hausdorffness, Normality, Quotient Topologies, Connectedness

- Afternoon : Analysis I - Nick Longo and Rob Masson (handout pdf)
Measure theory, motivation of Lebesgue integration,
function spaces and Arzela-Ascoli.
- Evening (8:00): Game night in the Barn; meet at 8:00 in the Barn (3rd floor Eckhart/Ryerson) for board and card games.
Thursday, Sept. 14:
- Morning : Manifolds I - Hanna Bennett and Ian Biringer
Manifold, examples including S^n and RP^n, calculus in
R^n, change of variables, inverse and implicit function theorems,
existence and uniqueness of solutions to ODEs.
- Afternoon : Category Theory - Niles Johnson and Justin Noel
Category, functor, natural transformation, limits,
colimits, products, coproducts, pullbacks, universal property, lots of
examples.
- Evening (4:15) : Free trip to Art Institute; meet in first-year office at 4:15. The museum is free from 5:00-8:00.
Friday, Sept. 15:
- Morning : Algebraic Topology - Mike Shulman and Megan Guichard (Handout pdf )
Fundamental group, covering spaces, universal covering, homotopy, group actions.
- Afternoon (E206): Life in Chicago, a forum to learn about all Chicago has to offer, including a Q&A session.
Saturday, Sept. 16:
- Afternoon (1:00) : Trip Downtown, meet at bus stop at 55th and S Hyde Park Blvd at 1:00.
Sunday, Sept. 17:
- Afternoon (1:00): International Student Orientation (Mandatory). At International House, in the Assembly Hall. More information here.
Monday, Sept. 18:
- Morning : Sleep in! Nothing planned.

Tuesday, Sept. 19:
- Morning : Get university ID cards, 1100 E. 57th Street, Regenstein Library A-11.
- Afternoon : Graduate Student Orientation: includes lunch, information sessions, and refreshments at the pub.
Wednesday, Sept. 20:
- Morning : Algebra III - Aaron Marcus and Matt Booth
Tensor algebra, symmetric algebra, alternating powers, Hom, determinant, differential forms, exterior derivative, deRham complex.
- Afternoon : Manifolds II - Alex Ritter and Keerthi M.
Tangent spaces, tangent bundle, vector bundles, Lie groups, Lie algebras, examples.
- Evening (6:00) : Dinner at Medici, 57th and Kimbark. Meet at First-year office at 5:45 and walk over.
Thursday, Sept. 21:
- Morning (E206): Departmental Orientation
- Afternoon (Time TBA): First-year picture, meet on front steps of Eckhart for your class picture.
- Afternoon (2:15-4:15) : Homological Algebra - Emma Smith and Kate Ponto (Handout pdf)
Complexes, homology, cohomology, exact sequences, derived functors: Ext and Tor via projective resolutions.

- Morning : Breakfast at Pancake House, 1517 E. Hyde Park Blvd, by the corner of Lake Park and E Hyde Park, meet at restaurant at 10:00. Visit the website for a menu
- Afternoon (3:00, E206): Forum on how to get through the first year program
- Evening (5:00) : Departmental Picnic, outside in quad behind Eckhart.
Saturday, Sept. 23 :
- Afternoon (2:30): Walk Downtown, meet in first-year office for a lakeside walk downtown to Giordano's.
