A list of special events going on around the city during the two weeks of WOMP.
Morning sessions start at 10 am and afternoon sessions begin at 1 pm, unless otherwise noted.
All sessions will meet in Eckhart 207 unless otherwise noted.
Monday, Sept. 12:
- Morning : Welcome and Tour of Hyde Park
- Afternoon : Algebra I - Travis Schedler (handout pdf/ps) and Emma Smith
Basis, dual vector spaces, dimension, linear maps, spectral
theorem for normal operators, determinant, rings, ideals, modules, PIDs, UFDs.
Tuesday, Sept. 13:
- Morning : Algebra II - Jonathan Sparling and Mike Broshi
Classification theorem for abelian groups, classification of modules over PIDs, Jordan form, characteristic polynomials, semisimple and nilpotent decomposition, fields, field extensions, Galois theory.
- Afternoon : Free Trip to Art Institute, 111 S. Michigan Ave; meet in first-year office at 1:00.
- Evening: Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave; museum free from 5:00 - 8:00.
Wednesday, Sept. 14:
- Morning : Topology - Liz Beazley and Jim Fowler
Topology, basis, subbasis, first countable, compactness,
connectedness, separation axioms, product topology, quotient topology, metric
spaces.
- Afternoon : Analysis I - Bryce Johnson and Rob Masson
Measure theory, motivation of Lebesgue integration,
function spaces and Arzela-Ascoli.
- Evening (8:00): Brew & View at the Vic, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave; meet at 7:00 in the first-year office for drinks and a double feature:
Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Lords of Dogtown.
Thursday, Sept. 15:
- Morning : Manifolds I - Matt Day and Gautam Iyer
Manifold, examples including S^n and RP^n, calculus in
R^n, change of variables, inverse and implicit function theorems,
existence and uniqueness of solutions to ODEs.
- Afternoon : Category Theory - Justin Noel (handout: pdf) and Mike Shulman
Category, functor, natural transformation, limits,
colimits, products, coproducts, pullbacks, universal property, lots of
examples.
- Evening (7:00) : Dinner at Medici, 1327 E. 57th Street; meet in first-year office at 6:45.
Friday, Sept. 16:
- Morning : Algebraic Topology - Richard Haynes and Andy Putman
Fundamental group, covering spaces, universal covering, homotopy, group actions.
- Afternoon (E206): Life in Chicago, a forum to learn about all Chicago has to offer, including a Q&A session.
Saturday, Sept. 17:
- Afternoon (1:00) : Trip Downtown, meet at bus stop at 51st and Lake Park Ave.
Monday, Sept. 19:
- Morning : International Student Orientation, 1414 E. 59th Street, Assembly Hall of International House from 9:00 - 12:00.
- Afternoon : Analysis II - Qendrim Gashi and Ann Scheels
Hilbert spaces, Banach spaces, Fourier series, Fourier transforms.
- Evening (7:00): Game Night; meet in the barn on the third floor of Eckhart for card and board games.
Tuesday, Sept. 20:
- Morning : Get university ID cards, 1100 E. 57th Street, Regenstein Library A-11.
- Afternoon : Graduate Student Orientation: includes lunch, information sessions, and refreshments at the pub.
Wednesday, Sept. 21:
- Morning : Manifolds II - Mohammed Abouzaid and Masoud Kamgarpour
Tangent spaces, tangent bundle, vector bundles, Lie groups, Lie algebras, examples.
- Afternoon (2:00-4:00) : Algebra III - Chris Bremer and Jayadev Athreya
Tensor algebra, symmetric algebra, alternating powers, Hom, determinant, differential forms, exterior derivative, deRham complex.
- Evening (7:30) : Redmoon in Jackson Park; meet at 7:00 in the first-year office for a theatrical performance on the lake.
Thursday, Sept. 22:
- Morning (E206): Departmental Orientation
- Afternoon (1:30): First-year picture, meet on front steps of Eckhart for your class picture.
- Afternoon (2:00-4:00) : Homological Algebra - Kate Ponto (handout: ps) and Niles Johnson
Complexes, homology, cohomology, exact sequences, derived functors: Ext and Tor via projective resolutions.
- Evening (9:30) : Night in Wicker Park, meet in the first-year office at 9:30 to experience some of Chicago's northside nightlife.
Friday, Sept. 23:
- Morning : Breakfast at Pancake House, 1517 E. Hyde Park Blvd, meet at restaurant at 10:00.
- Afternoon : Topics and Examples - Richard Cudney and Ben Lee
deRham cohomology, integration of differential forms, Stokes, Grassmannian, Cauchy integral theorem.
- Evening (5:00) : Departmental Picnic, outside in quad behind Eckhart.
Saturday, Sept. 24:
- Afternoon (2:30) : Walk Downtown, meet in first-year office for a lakeside walk downtown to Giordano's.
